SATA Bridge Platform IP Core - IPP-SA143A-BR

The IntelliProp SATA Bridge Platform is an extensible IP Core which encompasses a SATA Device core, a SATA Host core, along with an embedded processor to handle bridging between these cores including system management interfaces outside of SATA scope. The bridging interface allows for data and command manipulation along with non-host initiated command generation and processing to the attached SATA device.

IPP-SA143A-BR Applications

The IPP-SA143A-BR is available for integration into device ASIC or FPGA designs to provide an industry compliant SATA 1.5 Gb/s, SATA 3.0 Gb/s, and SATA 6.0 Gb/s interface.  Some of the target applications for the IPP-SA143A-BR are:

  • Customers can control the flow of commands and reorder queues.
  • Compression of data whereby less space is utilized on the main drive while maintaining or improving performance of the main drive.1
Allows for SATA-ATA devices to seamlessly represent themselves as SATA-ATAPI devices.

1 Feature supported by allowing for platform extensions. Data compression is not supported in the base platform.

IPP-SA143A-BR Features

  • Fully compliant to SATA 1.5Gb/s, 3Gb/s, and 6Gb/s2 specifications.
  • SATA to SATA bridging.
      • ATAPI/ATA command set interface on the front side (connection to host) and ATA command set interface on the back side (connection to SATA HDD/SSD).
  • Extensible bridging platform. Custom user block extensions allowed by replicating existing blocks or adding custom new blocks.
  • Command set support for Windows XP, Windows 7, along with standard Linux discovery and communication.
  • Boot Device Capable.
  • Firmware Extensions to allow support for Drive Letter Persistence as a Removable Device.
  • Vendor Specific Command support (managed by firmware, supported in hardware).
  • Safe Eject Handling.
    • On the fly data hardening support allows for commands only to be retired once an acknowledgement has been received from the attached SATA device.
  • Write Protect Function Handling.
  • I2C interface for managing external peripherals via firmware.
  • Field Update: Utilizing Intelliprop Remote Update (IRU) control block. (Requires Active Serial Configuration scheme on Altera FPGA’s).

2 FPGA transceivers must support SATA Gen-3 speeds (6GHz).
